The Wizard

Perth Denar at the age of 18

Perth Denar

(Pictured at the age of 18)

Age: 26

Sex: Male

Profession: Magical Merchant and Wizard

Body Type: Husky

Appearance: Not usually noticeable as a wizard right off, Perth is normally mistaken for any other merchant in the city. While most wizards are gaunt or lanky, Perth retains the hardy meals which he prefers on a daily basis well. Over several years of reading, Perth now requires some sort of light spectacles to help him see, a common side-effect of many solitary hours spent in dim lighting reading tomes.

History: Perth Denar holds his magic dear to him, as well as street smarts. Unlike most moderate wizards, his outlook on life changed when circumstances that brought him to Waterdeep took his entire life for a crazy spin. After his first few days in Waterdeep, peddling scrolls to the docks people, his business venture wasn’t going well at all. By happenstance a goon working for a middle-class merchant accosted Perth in broad daylight and stole all of his money-making scrolls. Resistance ended him up with a broken nose, but at least he got away with his life. Soon after (and still trying to clean up the blood), Perth was approached by an even smaller than normal halfling, offering help and compensation from the merchant with the payment only being in friendship. Reluctant at first, Perth stayed around the halfling simply for food and safety. Within a few days, the small halfling had done well in sneaking in to the merchant’s abode, and by the end of the hour returned with numerous goods (including a highly difficult wizard’s spell book) which Perth took with great pride. Since that week, Perth and the halfling learned from each other how to survive well in the great city of Waterdeep, gaining friendship and running (almost literally) through hard times. Perth trusts his friend’s loyalty and will give much to keep things the way they are. However, Perth always remains mindful that thieving is the halfling’s job, while Perth needs time and money to come one step closer to his dreams. He is however also scared to rely on the halfling for help, but it must be done, or death might be a better choice than indentured servitude.

Background: Perth grew up as the youngest child of 7, and he also kept in the company of many friends. He held his parents in less than average regard due to the fact that they had never gone out of their way for him. Everyone he knew loved the fact that he could pick up a book and learn much more than most adults could, yet he was just a child. Perth kept many friends close due to this, and frequently he would spend nights away from his family’s middle-class house, staying with friends due to hostilities at home from jealous siblings. His friends kept him around because of his high intelligence, as they could ask him any question and there was never one he had no answer for. When he reached the age of 10 years, Perth’s uncle Demetri (a wizard rumored to be taught by a demi-god), presented Perth with an amulet. The amulet Giantswas Perth’s fascination for years after, as it gave him many answers to questions he had about the world, and in turn he learned how to read magic. The face of the amulet contained a golden shield with an orange on the top, inscribed in gold with the name “Orange Empire Destiny Oracle”. Perth wouldconstantly wear it, and for years was known in the village as the “Orange Oracle”. His uncle never actually told him what the pendant was from, and Perth didn’t care enough to ask but when he did want to ask, Demetri left to adventure the world again. In his teen years, Perth began venturing out more from the village and roads, eventually peddling his services as a fortune teller and earning money beyond what anyone knew or cared. At the age of 17 the Denar home suffered a horrific attack, one that Perth had only returned to see the end of. Fire Giants had raised his village to the ground, burning the village with boulders of fire and setting the farms ablaze.  Only one fire giant had remained and was playing with a known friend of Perth’s by burning marks into the poor boy’s skin with his fingers. Perth tried in vain to stop the torture, only angering the giant. Molten rock had flung through the air at Perth, hitting him in the chest and searing the marks of his beloved pendant into his chest, before the pendant broke in two and he blacked out. The orange pendant became bonded permanently with Perth, and he would have to keep it with him at all times. Perth Denar had only awakened later to a broken amulet and an entire village in ashen ruins. To this day, he knows not of why the fire giants had attacked such a small village, but loathes the thought of any giant. Perth searched for days to find any trace of his family, but found no bodies, bones, or trace of them. From that time on, Perth set out in search of a new place and friends to call home, far away from the tiny farm life. He hoped that one day his family would reappear, but in the meantime he would establish himself as a great wizard like his uncle Demetri knew he would be.
